Here is the week in jazz. Ethan Iverson shares his thoughts on Whiplash (and drums) (and North Texas!), Orrin Keepnews passed away, some nice writing about Willie Ruff (who is Willie Ruff!) and some announcements about new jazz films out on DVD.

Jazz news is sometimes interesting, and always bizarre. Kenny G might have pushed for the development of the frappuccino. Everything else that happened last week seems to come from Jason Moran or Charles Lloyd.

Several interesting links to last week’s jazz news. Charlie Haden’s musical spirit is still being celebrated and honored in New York. His playing is absolutely timeless; always fresh and exciting. I was fortunate to see him live several times, including one frustrating time in which one his solos was washed out by a lowing flying airplane. Cheers to Charlie Haden.

This post is probably better titled “Last Month’s Jazz”. We have a lot to catch up here at Dizzyland and we’ll probably be spending a few days discussing everything that we’ve missed in the last month. A lot of great stuff here. Jazz musicians getting older, discussions of the year 2014 in jazz, a great Cannonball Adderley video and a heart-warming story about Mike LeDonne.

Last Week’s Jazz – 12/8/14

Well, we have this years jazz Grammy nominees. I used to enjoy the Grammy’s, the spectacle of it, but not much anymore. They do a fantastic job of recognizing jazz artists (Herbie! Maria Schneider!) and helping identify great young jazz artists (the Grammy in the schools program). But I don’t get jazz awards in general, especially at this level. Awarding someone who plays the best recorded solo? I don’t get it. Not sure there is ever a sastifying result. Plenty of other jazz news though including another jazz biopic (it seems like there is a new one every week!) and some jazz for the holidays.
