Is This A Precursor to Giant Steps?

By Sam Griffith

A few days ago I was enjoying the WGN show “Manhattan” on Hulu, when I heard this delightfully bizarre song that quickly captured my interest.

This is “Chica Chica Boom Chica” from the musicalĀ That Night In Rio. If you listen at :54 and 2:35, it sounds like the root movement to Giant steps, 18 years prior to Giant Steps being recording. Duke Ellington’s Day Dream is considered one of the precursors to Giant Steps (and likely because EVERY Jazz musician listens to Ellington). This example, eh, probably not. But, maybe Coltrane played in the pit for this show at some point. Or really liked Carmen Miranda.
