“Squatty-Roo” is a classic, feel-good song originally from the Duke Ellington version. I was drawn to this version for several reasons.
- The energy of the band is infectious. Right from the very beginning of the performance, everyone is having fun and swinging their butts off. This is what big band jazz should sound and FEEL like.
- The soloists are awesome. The two trumpet soloists (Gilbert Castaneda and Clay Jenkins) both stand out…or maybe I’m a little biased. But everyone sounds great.
- Happy jazz. There is something to happy jazz. Sometimes confused with “corny” jazz, happy jazz is special. This performance is definitely “happy jazz”
